Final Project

Above is my letterhead and business card. I took my logo design from illustrator and placed it into the InDesign program. My original logo's name, "Spik'D" was a different font before. I decided to change it to Arab Brushstroke D because the original font look to mechanical. I decided to keep all the words/writings the same font, with different features. I went with the cyan blue again because most tracks have this type of color. For the letterhead I used illustrator to design track lanes for the corners of the paper. I used the image below to guide me.
I incorporated the logo too, but small and above the address and contact information. I feel like it balances out the paper.

Below is my tri-fold brochure.

The first page I wanted to make simple and attractive so I just put the name of the company and the logo. I placed both images in via illustrator. When you open the brochure you see a quote from the famous runner Steve Prefontaine.

I placed the track image in the left corner to make use of the negative space. The middle page is the "About Us" section. It describes what the company is and what it wishes to accomplish. I used the same cyan blue for the banner but lowered the transparency so it would be easier to read the black font within. I placed another quote from Steve below the paragraph. Lining up the font took me some time, I didn't want to have any hyphenated words. To the left of the middle page is "Our Products." I broke up the paragraph into two smaller ones so the reader doesn't get lost in the words. Yet another quote was added above the track. I lowered the transparency of the track to about 50% on both pages so you could see the quote more clearly. The other side of the brochure explains the company's expertise on running. the same font, Arab Brushstroke D was used.
The back of the brochure displays the contact information. I wanted to make it a little larger than the rest of the brochures font because it really is the most important information. I wrote out the address in illustrator so I could include the cyan blue lines in the company name.

In the end, I'm satisfied with my final project. I really enjoyed working on it, perhaps because I had a better understanding of all the programs that we used throughout the semester. I had to test print many times to fix the alignment of the brochure and get it just right. I went to UPS to print out the final documents. I was upset that they only had one type of paper however.

Corporate Identity Questionairee

1)   What is your business?
We make our own running spikes,as well as sell other brands.

2)   Describe your business in one sentence
We make top of the line running spikes and sell a variety of well known running sneakers.

3)   Who is your target audience?
Runners of all gender, ages, athletic ability, and distance preference.

4)   Who are your competitors?
Sayville Running Company(on Long Island)

5)   What makes them better/worse than your product/service?
Sayville running company only has one location-in Sayville. They do not produce and distribute their own sneakers. They only sell other brands and have a limited selection on track spikes. They sell clothing and other running accessories. Spik'D specializes and focuses only on footwear and those accessories.

6)   Do you currently have an identity?  (This is more for companies that are already established and you’re just revamping the logo/corporate identity.  If you have a new company or product, skip this question.)
No.

7)   (If your answer to #6 is no, skip this question)  What do you like about it and what don’t you like about it?
Skip.

These following questions might seem silly, but their purpose is to help generate ideas.
1)   How do you want your image to be seen in two years?
We want this company to be the primary stop for runners to obtain their running sneakers. We want to eventually be recognized by elite/professional runners from around the country.

2)   If your company was an animal, what animal would it be and why?
A cheetah, because our spikes are slim, durable, and built for speed.

3)   If your company/brand was a person, who would it be and why?
Steve Prefontaine, because he was a record-breaking, running legend. He introduced the world to the wonders of running as a serious and exciting sport. He set American records in almost every track and field race he ran in.

4)   If your company/brand was an object, what would it be
A pair of lightweight, victorious track spikes.

5)   If your customer was a cartoon character, who would it be?
Road Runner, from Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner. He is constantly on the move and tearing up the roads at top speeds, turning everything he runs by into dust.

Project Four: Lyrical Collage

The song line lyric I decided to base my project on is "you're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be, and I don't want to go home right now." The line is from the song Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. The background photo contained many of the clouds and such so I used the brush tools to enhance them. Some I made more luminous while others I added in some yellows to create image of light. The five images I Incorporated in are the stop, caution and go signs. For each one I used different effects, such as the stop sign I added the wind tool and for the go sign I crystallized it. I added in the hands holding the earth because its part of how I interpret the song lyrics. The image is a bit chaotic because,in my opinion, the singer can't decide if he should stay with the girl and live a "righteous" life or continue on his own in the worldliness of the world, which is one big mess.

Progress of the project.

Custom Graphic

I decided to create a abstract fall themed graphic with brushes and patterns. I created the background pattern. I used a gradient map for the pinkish background then used the preset leaf brushes to scatter the leaves around the paper. I changed the effects of the brush-including its outer glow and drop shadow. I saved it as one of my own pattern presets. I then used the same leaf brush but adjusted the transparency and effects to create a whole new brush that I saved. I used my new brush on a new layer to place the leaves on top of my background gradient in a green hue. I transformed my background slightly to include many grass brushes at the bottom of the frame. The scatter option was important for this. I also created a new pumpkin brush from http://thesqueakygrocerycart.blogspot.com/2012/09/free-pumpkin-master-pumpkin-patterns.html. I transformed the image and made it my own in order to fit in the graphic. I also got a scarecrow from http://riartdesigns.blogspot.com/2010/11/freebie-fall-scarecrow.html. For this image I sharpened the edges and exposure.

Assignment 5: Photoshop Insertion

I decided to insert myself in two different places because I would love to travel to both and I wanted to practice a little more with the lasso tool.
The first place I decided to PhotoShop myself in is Hawaii. I always wanted to go there, and was even considering going to college there. This was my first insertion so I look a little bright but I did attempt to blend myself as much as i could with the background elements.

The second place I have always wanted to go is Paris. I had to crop the image for this photo so it wouldn't be so far away, to the point where I would have to insert myself even smaller. With the free transform tool I did my best in sizing myself appropriately. I also changed the background elements slightly. I changed the contrast and brightness slightly to best match body appearance.

Project 3: Lava Lamp

The word I decided to base my illustrator project on was "groovy." The word inspired my aesthetic choices. When I think of groovy i think of bright,neon-like colors. Therefore, I chose light green and blue for the maority of the background color. These two colors are complementary to each other, creating a visual appealing effect. For the background I used the pencil tool and the eye dropper tool alot. I then did the Blur effect to mesh the colors together nicely. The lava lamp is deisgned using a various amount of tools, such as the pen, pencil, and effect designs. I wanted to make the peace sign stand out since peace in itself is a bold statement. I constructed the sign using the pathfinder and divide tools. I used plenty of layers and sublayers to create this trippy, almost messy like vector image.

Here are some of the references I used:

Spik'D Running Co.

For my company "Spik'D Running Company" I decided to design a logo that references back to a track lane. Mostly all serious track and field athletes could recognize it resembles a track by the starting triangle and the dashed lines within the image used for sprinters. I went with this color blue because on most tracks, the triangles are actually this shade of color. I only decided to outline the shape with the blue, however, because I feel like it would be too bright if the shape was filled in entirely. The rest of the logo is black. I made the logo semi-simplistic so it has more versatility and its features would not be lost if the image had to be shrunk down to fit on various signs/products. The font I decided to use for the word "Spik'D" is bold and tough- which most track athletes are. It is not overly masculine though, so females won't be turned off. The "running company" underneath "Spik'D" is italicized and smaller because I'm hoping people will become familiar with just saying "Spik'D" and think about running. I put these words in the same blue I used for the triangle and actually made the lines within dashed. Another fun fact about the company in general is that the big D in the word "Spik'D" actually refers to me-in that many of my friends call me by Dee.

Below is my progress with the logo. I didn't feel like this design was up to par or represented a track well. The red color also was too vibrant up against the black in my opinion.

This is another track reference I used for designing my logo.

Reference for Logo

This is one of the references I'm using for my logo. Working on really trying to make the logo look like a track lane, in the simplest way.

Sketches for Spik'D Running Company

1. The first logo is in the design of a foot with a spike coming out of the middle of it. I would make the spike 3D like and black. The foot would have no fill and the company name would be colored.

2. This logo is just a running shoe spike that would have a black outline and the Spik'D font would be on the inside of the circular part of the spike. The flame- like lines coming off the spike represent speed and would be a warm color.

3. The third design is one of my favorites. The lines are simple yet timeless and the outer lines represent track lines. The arrow gives off the emotion of moving forward, fastly. The quality of that line would be thick. The logo would be black with the exception of the tiny arrow coming off the end of the thick line, which is almost spike like. I was thinking of making it red or purple.

4. This design would have a thick flag-like pole with a spike, that could look like a flag, coming from the top. It would have a more masculine feel/texture. The 'D from the name Spik'D would be the only letter in the flag, the rest would be written around the image.

5. The last logo would have a good usability and could be considered timeless. I have two black lines crossing towards the back, representing a track. The lines would start out thick and then thin out in the back, giving the feeling of motion. Perfect for a track company. The lines in the middle would be thin and representing the track line lanes. I would use either a neon or warm color for the brand name.

Project 2: Logo Brainstorming

For this part of the project I started brainstorming early and was able to think of ideas throughout the days. I wanted to create companies/products that were of interest to me- something I would actually purchase/use. Four of the five ideas are products and the last idea is for a fast food company.

1. LipLocks: this company will sell lip gloss but lip gloss that is embedded into lockets that are wearable. The line would included various flavors of lip gloss, from simple flavors such as vanilla, to more extreme flavors like banana cream. The lockets are to be small but big enough to be filled with gloss that people can use their fingers to apply. Lockets can be attached to chains of necklaces and dangling from bracelets. One logo idea would be of a lime green heart locket or a locket designed like lips.

2. Pictoscraps Inc: a scrap booking company that sells everything you'd ever need to create a beautiful scrapbook. Anything you could think of - from simple tape dots to graphic paper and scrap booking trimmers. It would be sold at major scrap booking stores.

3. SportsED: with the tag line "sports equipment for the sports minded" this company would be an affordable one that sells sports equipment. It's product line would be sold in sporting goods stores all over, such as Modell's and Sports Authority. The logo will have a good visibility.

4. Spik'D Running Company: this company will sell all types of running shoes but will be known for their high performance, extreme lightweight spikes (running sneakers with spikes at the bottom used for track and field track events). The logo will be unique, representing running, and placed on all their products. They will produce a various amount of running apparel but mainly focus on their shoes. Every month they will announce and produce a new line of spikes that will be highly advertised. It will be a popular, well known brand among the elite runners.

5. Burger TO Beyond: originally I came up with the company to be called burgers and beyond but looked on google to find there were a dozen of those throughout the country already. Burger To Beyond would be a fast food restaurant known for their thick, juicy burgers and their restaurants to be set up like outer space. The food prices will be in the affordable range- not expensive but nothing on "dollar" menus. Their logo will be solar space like and retro looking in font.

Five Logos

1. When this brand first came out I honestly thought the logo was stupid. But soon enough I feel in love with the brand. This logo is effective because it is so different yet simple. It's just two half circle lines put together but can fit perfectly on any equipment, apparel, or accessory of the brand. The targeted audience is athletic people. The logo does successfully reach this type of audience with its tough, almost masculine like features. This logo is always depicted in black, which makes it easy to place on different colored products.

2. This logo is very popular because it correlates with not just one, but two brands. The one above is Roxy and when you take off one half of the logo it is the quicksilver logo. Therefore, it is very memorable. The logo almost resembles a heart, which is appealing to many girls and women. The design is unique and original. The color of the logo varies from time to time to different colors.

3. The Hollister bird can be seen everywhere. Even though this logo usually always contains the brands name under it, it is still widely recognized as Hollister if you just see the bird on its own. The bird is a universal symbol but for this brand, which is beachy, is an appropriate icon. The target audience is young teens- to mid twenties and accomplishes that with its beach bird. It also has a high usability due to the fact that the bird can be shrunk or enlarged easily due to its simplicity.

4. The Target logo seems to be everywhere these days. The commercials are able to incorporate this logo through everyday objects featured in their commercials. They used to have the Target dog as their icon but changed to this one because it has more usability, in my opinion. They even sell their own products in their stores with this logo planted on them. The circles are memorable and is a timelessness symbol. The red color pops and grabs the attention of Target's wide audience.

5. The MTV logo has been around for what seems like decades. Therefore it is very memorable and the durability is high. Even though this television station doesn't really play music anymore, the icon is still the same(except it usually doesn't have the words "music TV" under it. The simple big M and TV have a good visibility even though not many products are made from within this company. This logo also ranges from color to color, without a set one. The black color above, however is simple and efficient in reaching the young and young adult age range.

I decided to create a beach scene with HTML5 code because I love to spend time at the beach, enjoying the sand and water. I started my layout with the three backround colors to create the sand, ocean and sky. I then divided up the sections and worked on one area at a time. The clouds in the sky gave me the most trouble because it was the first object I decided to create. Once I got the hang of it, I became alittle better at remembering the bezier codes. I included birds, the sun and a kite in the sky also. The birds are created with quadratic curves and the sun with an arc code.  The boat in the water was composed of a semicircle and the flag used with a quadratic curve. On the sand, I decided to put a linear gradient of red and white in the umbrella and sand castles along the sand edge with little flags at the top. As a reference to the sand castles I used this image:

My piece was successful because I used a cartoony sort of vibe that represents what you would normally see while sitting on the beach. The graphic took me some time but I am happy with the finished results, especially for my first time creating an image with codes.

I've been working on my project for a while now. It's pretty much taking over my life! It was a bit of a struggle in the beginning because I was still learning. However, I am getting a little faster and better at the codes(I think). I'm basing my image off of something like this:
I need some help with making my umbrellas though!

About Me

Hi I'm Deana. I'm a transfer from the always cold, Long Island, New York. I'm a communication major, but thinking about switching to advertising and public relations. I have little experience with digital arts so I'm excited to learn new skills!
